I have no experience with that myself. The working tree you have there, is that based on Javascript? Ramnivas is working on a DOJO tree as he says in another current thread on this list. That might be a good dnd starting point too.
I don't know how you guys set it up, but if you let it be backed by a proper tree model such as that old fashioned tree is that is in wicket-core, you get all the extra's like inserting and deleting nodes with it.
