I override newWebRequest in my WebApplication class as follows and works
fine.

protected WebRequest newWebRequest(HttpServletRequest request) {
        String path = request.getRequestURL().toString();
        getApplicationSettings().setContextPath(path);
        return super.newWebRequest(request);
}
