A book usually has the advantage that it is aimed towards teaching you something, using a logical build-up, showing tips and other insights. Online documentation is typically scattered.
Whether online documentation suffices is up to you. Personally I hardly ever read documentation beyond the first how-to's, but check out open source projects directly and look at example code, test cases and the code itself. But I regularly buy books to get a more complete picture of a project, rather than just figuring out how to do things. In this case: I'd buy the book; Apress books are good value for money, and imo this is the case for Pro Wicket as well.
