Just an update, if I change the line
<form wicket:id="homepageForm" id="form1" method="post" action="">
in the html to
<form wicket:id="homepageForm">
then it works ok.

The extra details I think were put in there by dreamweaver by the designed.
All I had done it added the wicket:id attribute.
