Eelco I was already including the setObjectStreamFactory() call. Whether or not the call was made made no difference to what I observed.
In any case, I updated to 1.3.0-incubating-beta1, and I no longer get a stack overflow. I'll therefore assume that my own page/component/model hierarchy is OK, and that there was a temporary blip somewhere in MockServlet.
