I think you're right.  I just found a closing ) instead of a }.  Amazing how
posting to this list sometimes makes you immediately solve the problem
yourself.  It still doesn't work the way I want it to, but it's not the
fault of the ^'s.  So, case closed.  (sorry to waste your time).
