Upps, i missed your post... I have desaturated the arrows a bit. Regarding the background coloring it isn't possible to make it transparent because the color is also used for the selection menu. If i set the background color transparent, the background of the arrow is transparent but for the menu entries browsers apply their default grayish color. At least opera and firefox do so.
I have made the background a bit darker so it is less obstrusive.
