Hello everyone,
At our projects, we recently (re)discovered some buried functionality of
<inputbox> that can easily be put to great use and I would like to share it
with you all.
You can use 'hidden=true' to remove the textbox portion of the inputbox,
leaving only the button.
What the Marvel and DC Database Projects have done with this is to make the
creation of some new pages MUCH simpler for new users.
Typically, new users are beginner or intermediate level skill with wiki
markup, but are very anxious to get started editing.
Take for example the user page for said newly registered Wikian, a natural
place to start practicing.
In the {{welcome}} template we place on user's talk pages, we include a
conditional statement, such that if their user page does not yet exist, it
shows them the button to create it.
Taking full advantage of the inputbox functionality, we also include a
preloaded template and an editintro message.
Example, with the button:
http://en.marveldatabase.com/User_talk:Example
After clicking the button:
http://en.marveldatabase.com/index.php?title=User:Example&action=edit§ion=&preload=Template:User%20Page%20Template&editintro=MediaWiki:AddUserPageMessage
(Please do not make any changes to the above pages)
As always, this is a work-in-progress...
Also, I think this is very much the tip of the iceberg and I would love to
hear what _you_ might do with such a feature!
Happy editing,
--
