This tag is used for Microformat <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microformat> hCalendar <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HCalendar>. Specifically, I am requesting that the whitelist entry in Sanitizer.php in setupAttributeWhitelist.$whitelist be enabled.
I only need this for Genealogy wikia. On our wikia, we have hCard and geo Microformats working. For examples on how microformats can enhance data interchange on a wikia see this genealogy forum note<http://genealogy.wikia.com/index.php?title=Forum:Microformats_on_Genealogy>. Of general wikia interest is hCard and hCalendar microformats for the social networking aspects. I am unaware of the rationale for disallowing <abbr>, but if it was just general principle, and Sanitizer.php can be configured just this way for genealogy wikia, our community is willing to undergo some disruption if the change bollocks up our site for a few days -Phlox.
