Huge progress has been made and the thing that was a problem is not a problem, now it's just a matter of bringing new people in and training them. On the Wikipedia side, see for instance the discussion at [[WP:AN:Please help me bring more roboticists to WP]], and I am very hopeful to sign up a bunch of new editors at Wikiproject Robotics who are robotics users, students, hobbyists and experts. There has been a quick thaw on both sides of the cultural divide.
The relevance to Wikia is that, although it's mainly WP that attracts these new guys to WP-and-sister-sites, everyone understands that not all content is encyclopedic, and much of it will live and breathe at Wikia (possibly at robots.wikia.com with my other stuff, but I'd be just as happy to see new wikis) and at Wikiversity.
