My final work-around was to set my open-tab-at-start-of-browser setting from the page with the daily article over to the page with the search box activated <http://www.wikipedia.org/>. As I mentioned previously, I design websites for a digital library, and I have all similar pages set so that search boxes have the cursor activated into them. I have never had any complaints about the navigation controls not working because, as other have said, the reason for going to one of my search pages is to search. Same with wikipedia.
