Actually, I have found that, according to the mailing list guru Casey Brown,
there is no way to "close" a list:

There's no way to "close" a mailman list.  Instead, I would suggest that you
unsubscribe everyone from the mailing list, make it so that new people can't
subscribe, hide the list from the list of lists page, and add a note to the
"list description" in [all appropriate languages] that says the list is closed
(and
pointing them to the other MediaWiki lists).

So simply place conspicuous warnings and remind people of the correct list.
