I'm looking at building a new extension which gives the functionality needed,
I've previously not mentioned it because it's only being written as a
proof-of-concept, and my current lack of time. When I have something basic to
demo and more time, my plan was to open dialog with Howie/Sumana about it per
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Writing_an_extension_for_deployment, and carry on
from there.
