Bug #: 36402
Summary: Language codes, rather than names, are shown in the
interlanguage links list
Product: Wikipedia App
Version: 1.2
Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Keywords: i18n
Severity: normal
Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Localization/Translation/Language
AssignedTo: [email protected]
ReportedBy: [email protected]
Classification: Unclassified
Mobile Platform: ---
Before version 1.2 of the app, the interlanguage links list showed language
names.
Starting with version 1.2, this list shows article names and the language
*code* rather than language name in parentheses.
Showing the language code is definitely a bad idea, because most people don't
know them and will have hard time identifying them in the long lists. The name
of the article in the native language doesn't help, because it can be spelled
the same way in many languages.
Besides, showing the article name may also be problematic. Though it's a nice
idea in general, it will not work well for long article names, for example
"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". If it's important for some reason to
show the article name, then the language name must be shown before it.
Finally, the usage of parentheses does a lot of mess in right-to-left
environments. Please note Bug 36401 when working on this one.
