Changing the preferences of hundreds of editors without asking (even if they
can change back) is just going to annoy them.

I suspect someone clever will come up with a good way to resolve the key issue
here - the different between "default to" and "never changed" for older users -
and then the same changes to default settings can be made without annoying
hundreds of editors.
