No problem -- thanks for spending time on an issue on an older browser on an

Yeah, it's shaping up more and more like that. I still could not reproduce the
issue today. But I have noticed that on loading pages (Wikipedia or other)
sometimes the browser seems to "hiccup", associated with data transfer bursts.
Probably my problem started with a slight section of page not being loaded
properly due to such a hiccup (and I blamed the new layout because it was the
first time I'd seen that -- sorry for that).

Agreed. Simplest solution that I can think of for the short term (although I
don't know if that is acceptable to you) would be not to collapse the footer
initially. Worst case scenario you still have a working escape hatch into the
regular site.
