I also had the impression that enabling this for sysops was on the agenda all along. There are many reasons to hide revisions from the greater public but still leave them accessible for admins. Not all to-be-deleted content is deleted for privacy reasons (which is mainly what oversight is for). Think about copyright violations, for example.
