But the thing about a bug like this is, of course, I wouldn't have any way of knowing I wasn't getting notifications. I think the real way to address this bug would be to make sure you thoroughly test this feature, including testing error modes. That is, look in the code -- if email fails for some reason, is it getting logged somewhere? Are those logs being checked systematically to make sure there aren't problems? That kind of thing. Again, I'd say, it's a really important feature that people rely on, and when it fails, it often fails silently such that no one ever knows, so I think it's worth some extra effort to ensure robustness.
