/diff/1-2/article may always mean "compare versions one and two of this
article". Or just put the revisions in the query string as we do now.


No, PUT means "place this in that location". It is normal that it replaces
existing content. https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2616#section-9.6

A problem with less-common methods is that it's harder to hook to them in the
server config, though.
