I have to say that it looks like there are some cool new (well, "new" in the sense that IE8 is new) HTML5-y features that we can use to sidestep the issues you've brought up. Admittedly that's not a perfect solution, and it might not work out for Wikipedias (since we can't very well deploy changes to Wikipedias that would break e.g. IE6), but it's a start.
