This issue may not be related to git at all. Were you using /data/project or
/home to store your repository? If so, it's possible that glusterfs got
corrupted (git files were damaged or aren't accessible), which happens quite a
lot these days and may need a recovery. Usually a best way is to reboot and
mount glusterfs again using latest version of gluster daemon.

If it's not a problem of gluster I don't see how it is related to wikimedia
labs.
