The API classes that modify entities have diverged quite a bit, using similar
but slightly different code to generate summaries, handle errors, load entities
(or parts of entities), etc. A refactoring would allow improved error handling
and more flexible and consistent generation of summaries. It would also remove
several hundred lines of redundant code.
