Maybe the problem is the constraint regarding the property you select, see http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Statements#Properties. If you are trying to use a property featuring the data type "item" you may only reference other items that exist in Wikidata. Indeed, this is not really obvious currently and there definitely should be some usability improvements in the future which probably should be addressed in another bug.
