I don't know if shortcuts can address all problems, but the issues would still
be quite painful for people other than shortcuts junkies.

I don't understand what you mean here, that there are very few messages in a
page? That you'd replicate the auto-scrolling we have for saving?

I thought there was a bug for the little far icons but I've not found it.

That's bug 46740 + another bug for scrolling or expanding the aids area (which
needs scrolling almost in all cases, AFAICS) + adding keyboard shortcuts for
the feature.
