Due to a VE bug all references in
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Glenn_Greenwald&diff=561437483&oldid=561434741
were fully serialized rather than selectively serialized. This showed some
issue where <ref/> was converted to <ref></ref>.
Not super-urgent as this will only affect modified refs once VE is fixed, but
still worth improving.
