My understanding is that unlinking can be both done by the clear formatting
button or by the trash button in the linking tool.

If you don't select exactly the word that you want to unlink (so if you include
even just a space, which I guess can surely happen), you'll be able to unlink
via the linking tool by clicking on the garbage can: but then, a weird cursor
appears and you can no longer edit links or templates. 

According to me and itwp users that happens with both FF and Chrome.
