IMO what it's doing is pretty sane, as that is how it renders, and the page
should be fixed as these cases appear on recentchanges. The resulting diff can
be quite difficult to diagnose. However if it is happening frequently maybe
build a list of cases to be reviewed by the community and fixed properly, or
mass update with a bot to be reviewed and fix.
