Thank you for patiently putting up with me. Indeed, I think bug 51897 is not a duplicate of this bug. My comments were strictly related to the original request here on bug 49686. I don't know what the VisualEditor team's view is on your request at bug 51897, so I'm going to go ahead and un-dupe bug 51897 now.
