This is somewhat related to bug 50321.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open your own sandbox/userpage (not a page in the mainspace) in
VisualEditor.
2. Add a link to a word ("xxx").
3. Control-click/right-click/command-click the new link to open the link in a
new tab or new window.
4. Discover that VisualEditor has sent you to an invalid URL:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/Xxx or
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Whatamidoing_(WMF)/Xxx
