I left a message as I was leaving beta about this issue. This is an update,
confirming it is a beta problem.
I was editing [[LHC]] article, after logging in properly, but when I hit
preview (of "Purpose" section edit) it demanded new login. But then it just
looped back, wouldn't log me in.
Main page showed watchlist, etc, even after reload, so it still knew me. But
attempt to edit my talk page failed in the same manner.
When I left beta and tried again, all was well, and edit was accepted, plus
another to the LHC page lead. So it is definitely a beta issue.
