the rc source column is new in core and can be used to better differentiate
between various types of "external" changes.
The Flow extension will be injecting stuff in recent changes and is using
rc_source.
For Wikibase to co-exist better with Flow, be more efficient in how it filters
changes, etc., it is important for Wikibase to make use of rc source.
Might also make supporting enhanced changes easier. :)
