These extensions do that with different features/design limitations.

The last one is, by far, the most promising IMO as it implements most of the
logic in JavaScript.
With a bit of development, those extensions could be converted into a
JavaScript-only solution, which any user can write and use on Wikipedia (and
any mediawiki), requiring no extensions to be installed. Once tested, it can
be made into a gadget for easy installation by all users on the wiki.
