If we stick to PHP (not a great language for scripts, on the other hand
everyone is familiar with it), then Behat is a nice BDD framework. It is
Gherkin-based so the tests would be language-independent to some degree. (Of
course, that also means more work than just using PHPUnit or a simple script
with exit status.)

If we don't care about accessibility, then Ruby would be the obvious choice -
it is the most popular language for test automation, and the QA team uses Ruby
as well, AFAIK.
