People could indeed patch it into their install, however I do not believe we
should not allow such a 'feature' into the official MediaWiki repository unless
the requesters are willing to be fully open about their use case.

As for your theory about losing/gaining readers, this is not a reader-facing
issue at all. Most will never even see the history page let alone one that has
a suppressed edit on it.
