As reported in bug 53489 comment 29.

Regular open source projects have contributors with different types of
affiliations: for profit, non-profit, and individual volunteering.
"Affiliation" is a word that covers well all of them. 

"Company" is very alienating in the Wikimedia context because the Wikimedia
Foundation or Wikimedia Germany (by far the two main contributors) are not
companies themselves.
