Since 1.23wmf12, the background of #mw-page-base (the top area, behind the
tabs, defined in navigation.less) is rendered using linear-gradient only, and
has no PNG fallback.
This mean older browsers that do not support gradients, such as IE8, now show a
plain grey background, and the tabs have a sharp white top edge. See attached
screenshot
