It was partly compounded by a system wide ldap issue. sudo issue was resolved. Also managed to set up a web proxy for the instance to replace previous instance-proxy (using https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:NovaProxy) Was able to login to wikitech as well eventually.
