First let me note that the initial reporter didn't mention categories in the title or comment 0, this was added by another user later on. Editors use HotCat, aren't they happy with it? Enabling HotCat in MediaWiki is simple. Someone asked that such functionality should be included in Core. However, the trend is not to inject more features in our already big MediaWiki Core, but user extensions et al to bring more functionality.
