Mainly asking since VisualEditor is now default on many wikis yet the knowledge
on how to prepare the templates is sparse and the understanding of how the json
works is even more so.

Would an embedded solution (as on Commons) work better/feel more natural? I.e.
a "normal" template for documenting the template which also produces
TemplateData behind the scenes.
