found in the course of enabling browser tests for the Vagrant role
visualeditor:
In the mediawiki visualeditor role and also in a bare wiki having the
VisualEditor extensions, references are not handled properly.
In the pure page view the existing references are not interpreted by the
<references /> tag. See screen shot.
In VE, the "Use an existing reference" button is disabled. See screen shot.
