The Apertium packages in stock Debian (and thus Ubuntu) are very very old and
should not be used.
I maintain the Debian/Ubuntu packages for Apertium and dependencies, and will
eventually update the distro packages. But, I've recently set up a build
service that keeps all Apertium packages up to date nightly. See
http://apertium.projectjj.com/apt/howto.txt for how to add to apt.
