The commons favicon shows up as a blank file in both Safari & Chrome.
Additionally, the version which shows up in other browsers is not transparent &
horizontally stretched.

Could we maybe declare the favicon as proposed in bug
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17980 ? This would allow for a
PNG with a proper alpha channel, while IE users would still see the normal one.
