The principal use of HTML comments in articles is to warn new editors to not do
something that seems "obvious" but there is talk-page consensus to not do. This
was a very widely-requested pain point from experienced editors who felt now
showing the comments was very damaging to new users' expereience. Hiding
comments which are there for new users seems like the wrong way around…

Long term, this will hopefully be replaced by a proper in-editor discussion
system, but until that's done, this will have to do.
