--- Comment #84 from Quiddity <[email protected]> --- 1) As I said in comment #6 - the mailto, irc, audio/video, and pdf icons are frequently useful for: * Readers to have "principle of least astonishment" when clicking on links which often have a non-typical-navigation result. * Editors to see that an unusual link has been used/added, which might warrant further investigation. 2) Our internal Pronunciation links all have an icon added automatically: e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Pronunciation and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:IPA - e.g. at [[Götterdämmerung]] Then, 2 similar "bits of information - a difference that makes a difference" that any of our users might appreciate. 3) we have a request from the Internet Archive to add icons to their links: #1 at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Archived_Pages#Implementation_ideas (mentioned at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/design/2013-October/001065.html ) 4) we have a request from the community, (and I believe connected to The Wikipedia Library), to add icons that denote Open-Access resources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Open_Access/Signalling_OA-ness For all of these reasons, I hope we can re-instate these icons in Vector. The patch to do so is currently -2'd based on lack of apparent consensus (https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/154350/). I've also left a comment (the first...) at [[Help talk:External link icons]]. Comments here or there, with additional rationales for supporting or opposing the re-instatement (for use-case or technical or other reasons) would be appreciated. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
