Summary: search-suggestions not discoverable by screen reader
           Product: MediaWiki
           Version: 1.17-svn
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: minor
          Priority: Normal
         Component: Vector Skin
        AssignedTo: [email protected]
        ReportedBy: [email protected]

The suggestions shown under the search field are not accessible via the screen
reader. It's not announced, and it does not get read. Ideally, when a term is
entered, the screen reader should announce that a list of suggestions is
available, and give the user some hint as to how to navigate there (down-arrow
works, tab closes the suggestion box and moves the focus away from the search
field).

This report results from feedback from the German Central Library for the Blind
(DZB). Please see

for some background.
