VIPS support should be added to MediaWiki. VIPS is a free image processing
system. It is good with large images (images larger than the amount of RAM you
have available), according to its website http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/.
This would solve our 12.5MP limit for PNGs and other large files.
I believe that this has been discussed with somebody from WMF, most likely Tim,
and that person I believe had done some tests with it.
