Summary: Install RSS import extension on http://mediawiki.org
           Product: Wikimedia
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: Normal
         Component: Site requests
        AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
        ReportedBy: z...@fooassociates.com
                CC: ro...@wikimedia.org

On MediaWiki.org, please install an extension that will allow import of RSS
feeds.

The extension should manage the import of RSS feeds securely and robustly. I
don't have an opinion on which extension is best (or even if any extension is
good enough for our purposes.)

The extension also needs to only allow trusted users on MediaWiki.org to set up
RSS imports – it's too risky (in several different senses) to include arbitrary
content from unknown sources.

==Background==
Last week, I added a news section to the MediaWiki.org developer hub article
(http://mediawiki.org/wiki/Developer_hub#Developer_news).

Chatting about this with RobLa, he noted that all of these news items should
have gone on the tech blog (http://techblog.wikimedia.org) and that it would be
likely best to post developer news in one central place and then pull the feed
into places where news is needed.

As a side note, we should categorize posts on the tech blog so that we can
differentiate between timely posts (like a post about service outages or the
engineering updates) and posts means to encourage action (like a post about
making extensions use resource loader before 1.17 is released.)
