You can up SMW to HEAD, but you'll need to do the same with Validator.

You checked out SMW 1.6 Release Candidate 1, which is older then 1.6. The
revision you see is the one the repo is at when you checked it out, not when
the RC tag was made. So you actually downgraded :)
