Personally I dislike the left to right listing on Special:Prefixindex.
Mostly because the eye wants to scan lists from top bottom (like on category
pages), esp. on prefix lists... not to mention wide monitors...
I don't want to discuss what's better, but MW shopuld offer an option to set
the direction and maybe even the number of columns.
