A human-invented version number stuffed into the 'extension info' for instance would add very little as it's likely to not get updated regularly; and you have nothing to compare it against other than wandering around to SVN and checking what the current value in trunk is, meaning it adds little or nothing over just pulling updates from SVN to begin with.
